On Sunday, the prime minister of Greenland rebutted assertions made by the United States. Trump declared that the United States will take over the island’s territory. Denmark is a NATO ally of the United States and the self-governing territory of Greenland, a huge, resource-rich island in the Atlantic. Trump claims that the territory is necessary for national security reasons and wants to annex it. The United States of America “will get Greenland,” according to President Trump. To be clear, the United States of America will not accept it. We are not part of anyone else. In a Facebook post, Jens-Frederik Nielsen stated, “We decide our own future.” We must avoid acting in fear. Our response must be one of peace, dignity, and unity. We must demonstrate to the American president calmly and clearly that Greenland belongs to us through these values, Nielsen added. Yesterday was like that. That’s how things are now. And that’s how it will be in the future,” he said at the end of his post. Nielsen’s post comes a day after the U.S. president told NBC News that acquiring Greenland with military force wasn’t out of the question. In his interview on Saturday, Trump acknowledged that “I think there’s a good possibility that we could do it without military force.” He stated, “This is world peace and international security,” adding, “I don’t take anything off the table.” Trump’s repeated suggestions have angered Greenland’s politicians and residents, and Danish leaders have also pushed back. When asked in the NBC interview what message this would send to Russian President Vladimir Putin, who has violated international law by invading Ukraine and annexed several of its provinces, Trump responded, “I don’t care.”
