U.S. On Tuesday, President Donald Trump stated that he would agree to a “double-sided” ceasefire with Iran in exchange for Tehran agreeing to reopen the Strait of Hormuz and holding off on any further attacks for two weeks. Trump made the announcement on social media less than two hours before his deadline for what he threatened would be the destruction of Iran’s “civilization.” He claimed that it transpired following conversations with Pakistani mediators who had been working toward the war’s end. “Based on conversations with Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Field Marshal Asim Munir, of Pakistan, and wherein they requested that I hold off the destructive force being sent tonight to Iran, and subject to the Islamic Republic of Iran agreeing to the COMPLETE, IMMEDIATE, and SAFE OPENING of the Strait of Hormuz, I agree to suspend the bombing and attack of Iran for a period of two weeks,” Trump wrote.
“This will be a CEASEFIRE with two sides!” Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said in a statement that “safe passage” through the Strait of Hormuz will be allowed for two weeks with “coordination with Iran’s Armed Forces and with due consideration of technical limitations.”
He wrote in the statement on behalf of Iran’s Supreme National Security Council, “Our Powerful Armed Forces will cease their defensive operations if attacks against Iran are halted.”
Iranian state TV flashed an announcement claiming that Trump had accepted Iran’s terms for ending the war, describing it as a “humiliating retreat” by the U.S. president.
Despite having previously rejected the 10-point Iran proposal for ending the war, Trump acknowledged it and referred to it as “a workable basis on which to negotiate” a long-term peace agreement. He wrote, “Almost all of the various points of past contention have been agreed upon between the United States and Iran, but the Agreement will be finalized and consummated in a two-week period.” He added the U.S. had “already met and exceeded all Military objectives, and are very far along with a definitive Agreement concerning Longterm PEACE with Iran, and PEACE in the Middle East.”
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said in a statement Wednesday that Israel backed the U.S. ceasefire with Iran but that the deal doesn’t cover fighting against Hezbollah in Lebanon.
His office said Israel also supports U.S. efforts to ensure Iran no longer poses a nuclear or missile threat.
Earlier Tuesday, Trump warned that “a whole civilization will die tonight” if Iran did not meet his deadline of 8 p.m. Eastern to agree to a deal with the U.S. and reopen the Strait of Hormuz, which has choked off a significant portion of global oil supplies.
In a post that Trump made on Truth Social on Tuesday morning, 12 hours before his deadline, he stated, “I don’t want that to happen, but it probably will.” However, he added that there was potential for something “wonderful” to happen in Tehran.
“However, now that we have Complete and Total Regime Change, where different, smarter, and less radicalized minds prevail, maybe something revolutionarily wonderful can happen, WHO KNOWS?” he added.

Iranian officials had vowed “an unforgettable hit” and “immediate and proportionate reciprocal measures” if Trump carried through with his threats. On Tuesday, Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian announced, along with 14 million other Iranians, that he had signed up for military service.
