Carney’s full response to Trump’s 35% tariff on Canada

On Friday, Prime Minister Mark Carney responded to the United States the imposition of a 35% tariff on some Canadian goods by President Donald Trump. Products not covered by the free trade agreement between Canada, the United States, and Mexico will be affected by the 35% tariff, which is an increase from the previous duty of 25%. The tariff isn’t applied to CUSMA members.

The U.S. application of CUSMA means that the U.S. average tariff rate on Canadian goods remains one of its lowest for all of its trading partners. President Trump has announced that the United States will increase its tariffs on Canadian exports that are not covered by CUSMA to 35%. However, U.S. duties and tariffs have a significant impact on other parts of our economy, such as automobiles, steel, lumber, and aluminum. The Canadian government will take action to diversify our export markets, protect Canadian jobs, invest in our industrial competitiveness, and buy Canadian.
