Quebec reports first case of tick-borne Rocky Mountain spotted fever

A tick-borne bacterial disease that is common in the United States has been first detected in Quebec, according to health officials. A single Rocky Mountain spotted fever case was reported in the Eastern Townships, east of Montreal. Local health authority epidemiologist Alex Carignan told X that the patient did well with antibiotics. According to Carignan, the infection can result in death if not properly treated, causing high fevers and a distinctive rash. The dermacentor tick, also known as the American dog tick, is the vector of the disease. Experts thought the disease would reach Quebec, according to Carignan, but the first case was found earlier than expected. The Canadian Press first published this report in August. 19, 2025.
