U.S. senators urge Canada to ‘give us another chance’ on trade, tourism

Despite U.S. President Donald Trump’s recent visit to Ottawa, members of a bipartisan group of U.S. senators say they want to improve relations between Canada and the United States. Recent attacks by President Donald Trump, with the sole Republican pleading with Canadians to “give us another chance.” Friday’s meeting between the five senators and Prime Minister Mark Carney saw Carney promise to pursue a new economic and security partnership with the United States while acknowledging the end of the trend of “deep integration” between the two nations. According to American lawmakers, the long-standing relationship must continue, with partnerships in trade, tourism, and defense among the most important areas in which collaboration is essential. Republican Senator said, “We have to do this together.” Mercedes Stephenson was informed by North Dakotan Kevin Cramer in an interview that was broadcast on The West Block on Sunday. We will be more successful at it if we are friends as opposed to just tolerating one another…. I am only in Ottawa to express my gratitude and to urge Canadians to reconsider and give us another chance. Since Trump announced his intention to make Canada the “51st state” and slapped extensive tariffs on Canadian goods, Canadians and various levels of government have abandoned the United States. Statistics Canada has reported four straight months of steep year-over-year declines of return trips to Canada from the U.S., and some states such as California have launched ad campaigns to try to lure Canadian tourists back.
The Democratic Senator stated, “Colleagues of mine in other states are saying the same thing about tourism that bookings of Canadians to come to Virginia Beach are down significantly.” Stephenson was informed by Virginia’s Tim Kaine. Therefore, we are definitely seeing it. “We were aware, because we all have great friends in Canada, that there was a lot of anxiety about, well, gosh, what do Americans think of us?” He stated in describing the reason for the senators’ visit. “The five of us wanted to come to tell Canada that we loved it,” The majority of states in the United States, including those represented by the senators who traveled to Ottawa, trade most heavily with Canada. The senators also met with the ministers of foreign affairs, national defense, and industry, as well as the Business Council of Canada. Both Cramer and Kaine stated that the election of Carney represents a “new chapter” for the relationship between Canada and the United States, particularly in light of Trump’s tensions with former prime minister Justin Trudeau. Democrats Jeanne Shaheen of New Hampshire, Amy Klobuchar of Minnesota, and Peter Welch of Vermont were also on the trip. Cramer cited defense spending and Carney’s promise to achieve NATO’s goal of 2% of GDP by 2030, two years earlier than Trudeau had promised, as examples of a new approach from Ottawa. He stated, “I couldn’t even get your previous prime minister to talk about a more significant contribution to NATO.” “I met with him once and sent him a few nasty messages, but he just doesn’t want to talk about it. It’s encouraging to me that this prime minister is stepping in big time.
