Crown expert finds Quebec man accused of daycare killings not criminally responsible

The Quebec Crown says its expert has concluded that the man accused of killing two children and injuring six others when the bus he was driving crashed into a daycare should be found not criminally responsible due to a mental disorder.
Friday, prosecutor Karine Dalphond informed a judge that the Crown and defense will now jointly present the facts of the case during the murder trial of Pierre Ny St-Amand. As a result of this development, instead of the jury trial that was scheduled to begin in April, the evidence will be heard solely by a judge, who will make the final decision regarding Ny St-Amand’s criminal responsibility. Ny St-Amand was taken into custody after a transit bus in Laval, Quebec, collided with the front of a daycare on February. 8, 2023.
Dalphond said two psychiatrists have examined Ny St-Amand, and both reached the conclusion that he should be found not criminally responsible.
The trial, which is scheduled to begin on April 7, will include both experts’ detailed accounts of the facts and evidence.
